Baila Esta Cactus documents the relationship between artist Jimmy James Canales and a Prickly Pear Cactus. Canales leads us through the painful affair utilizing videos and mementos from the first time they met, the harvest, their first and only dance at Dora’s Bar, and the tragic ending.
Jimmy James Canales considers himself a “Techjano Performance Artist.” Techjano comes from combining the prefix of “technology” with the term “Tejano” to create an ideology that utilizes his cultural identity, contemporary ideas, and appropriated materials. As a Performance artist, his medium is his body and the artwork takes the form of actions performed. These performances involve often arduous and endurance-based actions that explore concepts of identity, survival, movement, initiation, humor, consciousness, and spirituality.
Jimmy James Canales received a BFA from the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. He is a candidate in the MFA sculpture program at University of Texas at San Antonio. He is a candidate in the MFA sculpture program at University of Texas at San Antonio.
